My mom came to visit from freezing cold Chicago so we decided to head to Tierra Caliente (Hot Land) for three days of R & R. Our destination of choice was Girardot, about 3 hours away from Bogota. Since Girardot is almost 2,000 meters (6,000 feet) lower than Bogota and we are near the equator, it is hot, hot, hot. A land of tropical forests and refreshing pools – heaven!
We stayed at Bosques de Athan, a wonderful resort with cabins and five pools, kids’ activities, etc. We also spent a wild day in Piscilago, a fun water park nearby in Melgar. The beauty of going in late January is that most kids are back in school and we had the park almost to ourselves. We did not have to wait in line for any rides and were free to enjoy the rides as many times as we wanted to. I am not usually one for resorts and ride parks, but I have to confess that after a 4 week road trip with three kids in a tiny two door Chevy, fun in the sun was just what the doctor ordered!
