We are off to the Llanos

Llanos are Colombia’s flatlands and make up a huge portion of the country. It’s a hot and humid cattle raising and oil producing region and I have to admit that it never particularly appealed to us as a vacation destination. So here is the thing with the Llanos – while we are not really sure what the fuss is all about, anytime I mention the Llanos to a Bogotano, that person gets a dreamy look on his/her face, smiles and says something like, “Oh, I love the Llanos. The Llanos are so beautiful. The food, the sunsets, the people. I want to live out my old age and die in the Llanos.”

I have to confess that we have assumed that people here are so used to being surrounded by mountains that the big open spaces, complete with gorgeous sunsets (you can’t see a sunset in the mountains) speak to their souls in some poetic way. Seriously, people look blissed out when the Llanos are mentioned.

So we decided to take the plunge and experience the Llanos for ourselves. The kids have Fall break at school and we might as well travel. I will let you know what the fuss is all about…
